The European Union of Journalists’ Greek chapter awarded its annual prizes on March 30, named in honor of Constantine Kalligas, the distinguished Greek columnist and defender of European ideals who recently passed away. The prize winners, chosen for their “ethos and European orientation,” are in alphabetical order: Giorgos Aftias of Alpha TV; Eleni Bistika, columnist at Kathimerini (Greek and and English editions); Dionysis Kefalakos, editor of Naftemboriki; Vassos Mathiopoulos, columnist at To Vima; and Yiannis Tzannetakis of the newspapers Axia and Apofasi and the radio station 9.84. The awards and the prize money were presented by Takis Arapoglou, president and managing director of the National Bank of Greece. The awardees all expressed appreciation of the honor bestowed upon them and the example set by Kalligas, as well as their own views of the importance of reporting on many European issues from the Greek standpoint.
