Jazz extravaganza coming up as part of ‘Bridges’ series
Tribute includes concerts, lectures and bazaar

Following Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter is set to perform at the Athens Concert Hall. The celebrated double-bassist is scheduled to appear in the Banquet Hall on Saturday at 10.30 p.m.

This coming Saturday is bound to be a great day for lovers of jazz. Starting at 11 a.m. and continuing into the early hours of Sunday, the Athens Concert Hall is organizing a large-scale jazz celebration, including lectures, workshops, an exhibition showcasing landmark covers hailing from the Blue Note label as well as concerts and jam sessions later in the day. The tribute also includes jazz publications, specialist magazines, a record bazaar and jazz kiosks featuring all kinds of mementos.

Participating in the event are members of the international and local jazz communities, representatives of landmark jazz recordings and schools as well as rising stars who are already developing their own musical trends.

The tribute includes American double-bassist Ron Carter (scheduled to appear in the Banquet Hall on Saturday at 10.30 p.m., Carter is one more jazz great to appear at the Athens Concert Hall since last year after Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter), American pianist and composer Marcus Roberts and Israeli saxophone player Gilad Atzmon. Other participating artists include Hungary’s saxophone player Tony Lakatos, the Takis Fakanas ensemble, pianist Markos Alexiou, the Takis Paterelis Classical Quartet and the Dimitris Sevdalis Latin Sextet.

Concerts commence at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday, ending sometime on Sunday morning, when a final jam session will unite old and new blood. The event is part of the Athens Concert Hall’s “Bridges” series.

For more information and tickets, contact the Athens Concert Hall (1 Kokkali & Vas. Sofias, tel 210.728.2333).
