Now in its third year, “Berlinale in Athens” will present a selection of the films shown at the acclaimed German festival at four cinemas in the Greek capital (Asty, Danaos 1 & 2 and Mikrokosmos) starting today and running for a week.

Wieland Speck, the director of the Berlinale’s Panorama section, who was in Athens to present the agenda of Berlinale in Athens at a recent press conference, said that “the Athenian event has become a model for other, similar ones. What makes the Berlinale different to all other events of its type is that while those are attended mostly by professionals, in Berlin there is very strong audience participation.”

Here in Athens, organizers Cultural Action and Cinemad will present a lineup of 40 films selected from the various sections of the Berlinale, including from the international competition, the panorama, German films, the Forum and the World Cinema Fund, as well as a homage to Arthur Penn (“Bonnie and Clyde,” “Night Moves” and “The Miracle Worker”).

There is also an especially interesting selection from the Berlinale’s section “City Girls: Images of Women in Silent Films” that will be screened. This includes Ernst Lubitsch’s seminal 1925 film “Lady Windermere’s Fan” with the screening accompanied by live music performed by composer Aljoscha Zimmermann. On Sunday and April 24 and 26, the Gazarte gallery/bar (32-34 Voutadon, Gazi) will host a series of screenings inspired by food, and will also offer a menu prepared by German chef Frieder Gerlach. Admission costs 25 euros for one screening and dinner (not including drinks).
