Chinese vice president has wide-ranging talks in Athens

Smiles all round at Thursday’s meeting between Chinese Vice President Chen Zili and Greek President Karolos Papoulias, holding a gift from the People’s Republic of China, in the presence of Deputy Foreign Minister Panayiotis Skandalakis.

Chinese Vice President Chen Zili was given a warm welcome when she arrived Wednesday for an official visit, meeting first of all with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis at the Maximos Mansion, followed by an exchange of views on the rapid rise in imports of Chinese textile goods to Greece. An increase in Greek exports to China was suggested as a solution. Karamanlis accepted an invitation to visit China by the end of the year. Discussions of Greece’s experience in holding the 2004 Olympics in preparation for the Beijing Games scheduled for 2008 was also on the agenda. President Karolos Papoulias and Deputy Foreign Minister Panayiotis Skandalakis received the official guest at the Presidential Palace on Thursday. Meanwhile, Vice President Chen opened a photography exhibition, “Rediscover China,” at the Technopolis arts complex in Gazi last night, followed by a reception held by Ambassador Tian Xuejun. The exhibition, held under the auspices of the Culture Ministry of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Embassy in Athens, and taking place at the Athens Municipality’s Technopolis, 100 Pireos Street, will last until May 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
