ABUSES AT MAKRONISOS: A court case examining charges of abuse at the battalion on the island of Makronisos ended yesterday morning. The court found Lt. Colonel G. Tzannetatos guilty of an infringement of duty and sentenced him to five months’ imprisonment. Tzannetatos was allowed to buy out his sentence for the sum of 150 drachmas per day. The other defendant, Capt. Protopappas, was acquitted. STUDENTS: At noon yesterday about 800 Athens university students gathered at the Iris cinema to stage a protest against an imminent rise in university tuition fees. INCREASE IN EXPORTS: The volume of exports since July has increased by 20 percent. (...) It is estimated that during the current economic year, foreign exchange earned from export of Greek products will total $145 million, compared to $116 million the previous year. ECONOMIC REASONS: A woman identified as L.P., a 25-year-old servant who was staying with her cousin in the district of Karayianneika, tried to commit suicide yesterday by drinking a large quantity of quinine.
