ALEXANDROS PAPAGOS: “I have asked the government to make an official request to hold an emergency session of Parliament in order to discuss the country’s economic situation.(...) If it refuses once again to do so, I will accuse it before the Greek people of trying to avoid a confrontation.” SOPHOCLES VENIZELOS: “The leader of the Greek Rally party (Mr Papagos) was in too much of a hurry with his demand. When I went to the palace yesterday evening, I reported to His Majesty the King that after the return of Prime Minister Nikolaos Plastiras to Greece (from France, where is undergoing treatment in hospital), he will call an emergency session of Parliament to find out if the government has the confidence of the House.” KING VISITS PEURIFOY: The king and queen (yesterday) came to Athens and went to the US Embassy where the king had a meeting with the US Ambassador Mr John Peurifoy. They then went to the Palace, where Mr Venizelos was received by the king. It was after that meeting that he made the above statement. Mr Venizelos had a meeting earlier with Mr Peurifoy. It is believed that these talks were related to the general political and economic situation as well as the emergency session of Parliament. Mr Peurifoy is going to Paris (to meet with Prime Minister Plastiras).
