ALGERIA: Algiers, 2 – Heavy fighting has broken out between rebels and the French military supply protection division in a district some 150 kilometers east of Algiers. JERUSALEM PATRIARCH: According to a report from Jerusalem, the enthronement of the new patriarch, Benedict, took place the day before yesterday with great pomp and splendor in the presence of Jordanian officials, the Greek ambassador, consul and consular corps, and the leaders of other doctrines. GREECE’S IMPORTANCE: 5 – The American information service has released the full text of the report which Ambassador Norman Armour submitted on January 11 to the special US Congress committee on foreign aid programs... The ambassador’s conclusions... are as follows: “In my opinion, it could be said that Greece’s defense, independence and its alliance with the free world is of vital importance for the security of the US and Western defense in the Mediterranean. Keeping the current pro-Western government of Constantine Karamanlis in power depends to a great extent on the resolution of the Cyprus issue. If this government were to be overturned, it might be replaced by a coalition including pro-communist forces...”
