Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

MALRAUX IN ATHENS: A few days ago, the distinguished French writer and general secretary of Charles de Gaulle’s political party, Mr Andre Malraux, arrived in Athens. STRIKE: Yesterday morning, the following unions responded to a call for a general strike by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE): the tram and bus workers, the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, the British telegraph office, the water company, the gaslight company and electric railway. According to announcements by GSEE, the strike was completely successful as participation was across the board. FOTIS MAKRIS: GSEE’S general secretary, Mr Fotis Makris, along with secretaries I. Patsantzis, G. Laskaris and M. Panigyrakis called on Labor Minister Mr Gonis yesterday afternoon and lodged a strong protest on behalf of the workers at a bill that strangles their freedoms and vested rights by freezing wages at levels such that within the space of one-and-a-half months, the cost of living rose by 30 percent (Ed. note: Due to the revaluation of the drachma by Minister for Coordination Spyros Markezinis), which condemned wage-earners to death by starvation. They were also protesting at the government’s unprecedented indifference to the sacking of workers and the resulting mass unemployment. MANIADAKIS: Court report: His Majesty the King has received Mr Constantine Maniadakis.
