Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

JAMES VAN FLEET: A few days ago, US General van Fleet, the head of the Eighth Army in Korea, arrived in Athens from Izmir. The national defense minister, Mr Panayiotis Kanellopoulos, welcomed the general, mentioning his activities in Greece and the many services he has rendered to the Greek armed forces in cooperation with Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos. In reply, General van Fleet expressed his pleasure at being in Greece again. He also said he was obliged to state that the war against the communists in Greece had been waged solely by Greeks and not by the Americans led by Field Marshal Papagos. STEFANOS SARAFIS: A candidate for the United Democratic Left (EDA) in the Evros prefecture by-election is Mr S. Sarafis. CYPRUS ISSUE: In a memorandum to British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden, who is currently in Greece, Archbishop Spyridon of Athens and All Greece called on the British government to turn over Cyprus to Greece voluntarily. REFUGEES: The welfare minister, Mr Adamopoulos, met with ministry engineers at a special meeting yesterday to examine possibilities for reducing crowding at the refugee settlement of Drapetsona by distributing land plots in the districts of Evgenia and Tabouria, Piraeus, to refugees. WEARING THE PANTS: A young Athenian woman wearing a pair of trousers was seen walking proudly along Stadiou St yesterday, and was the subject of many and various comments on the part of passers-by.
