PAPANDREOU COMMENTS ON AIRMEN: The leader of the Liberals, Mr George Papandreou, has made extensive comments claiming that only a review of the air force officers’ trial would lead to justice, while the amnesty granted to them by the Karamanlis government only resulted in a coverup. Public opinion, and the airmen’s reputation, demanded unity in the armed forces — not a coverup, but justice. VAN FLEET FOR CYPRUS: According to reports from Rome, US General James A. Van Fleet, the former commander of the 8th Army in Korea (and linked to the Greek civil war) has said that Greece is absolutely right about the Cyprus issue. General Van Fleet... criticized US policy on the Cyprus issue. “Our traditional policy has been self-determination for all people. On the question of Cyprus, however, we seem to be abandoning our fundamental convictions,” he said. KARAMANLIS TAKES STEPS: The government yesterday evening submitted three draft decrees aimed at reducing the price of basic necessities such as sugar, cod, herring, frozen meat and feta cheese, protecting domestic industry and Greek workers.
