Selection: Michalis Katsigeras
TRANSITION: Deputy Prime Minister Sophocles Venizelos has recognized that the government (of Nikolaos Plastiras) is incapable of staying in power. He is trying to form a transitional government. NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS: (From an editorial in Kathimerini titled “The Road Block.”) “The two ruling parties have done the right thing in including the two deputies (Ed. note: Kyrkos and Karamaounas, elected on the United Democratic Left ticket) who for some time had aligned their national consciousness with the enemies of Greece. The situation is becoming clearer and the public now realizes that the government, which is breathing its last, has no hesitation, for the sake of a few votes, in allying itself with those whom the State only recently fought against and rendered incapable of harming it. The alliance of fellow travelers or crypto-fellow travelers with outright communists would benefit tomorrow’s voter in deciding whom to vote for.” TRAVELING BREAD SELLERS: By order of the market police, the sale of bread by traveling vendors is banned in the areas of Athens, Piraeus and Thessaloniki. STATE THEATER: The orchestra is to perform, on Monday August 18 at 9 p.m. at the Herod Atticus Theater, the following works: Rossini’s “William Tell (Overture),” Beethoven’s First Symphony, Debussy’s “The Sea” and Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” from “Prince Igor.” The concert will be conducted by Andreas Parides.
