Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

FRONT: The plan by the leader of the Communist Party (KKE), Nikos Zachariadis, as set out in an article last month in the newspaper Militant, published behind the Iron Curtain, had succeeded in the last phase of its goal as of last night, when the communist front was strengthened by an accord between the United Democratic Left (EDA) and the parties of the “Democratic Center.” Squabbling over the distribution of positions on the electoral lists ended with a complete concession by EDA, which satisfied itself with the 20 seats offered, with the right to place candidates of its own choice on any list it desired. Georgios Karlais also has the right to put forward 20 candidates, but these will be chosen by mutual consent. As for the platform, this includes a full amnesty for the past and a vague implementation of a ”national policy.” The Popular Front is contesting the elections for the main purpose of promoting KKE’s goal of having a simple proportional electoral system passed, so that Parliament will be dissolved and new elections held. KKE wants this to happen so that the country is thrown into complete disarray and the way opened for it to achieve its own unpatriotic activities.
