RECOURSE TO STRASBOURG: Strasbourg, 17 – The Greek government has submitted a request to the Secretariat of the Human Rights Commission of the Council of Europe for an investigation to be launched into the brutality to which certain Cypriot prisoners have been – and are still being – subjected by British police in Cyprus. The request is in addition to another formal request that the Greek government submitted on May 6, 1956, to the same Commission, protesting the emergency measures imposed by the British government in Cyprus. APOSTOLIDIS RESIGNS: In a letter yesterday to the prime minister, Deputy Prime Minister Andreas Apostolidis has reconfirmed his intention to resign and this has been accepted. In his letter, Apostolidis says his reasons for resigning are firstly his disagreement with his colleagues and, secondly, the state of his health. Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis sent him the following reply: “Since you invoke health reasons, I can only accept your resignation and express my regret that I will be deprived of what has been your excellent cooperation...”
