Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

KARAMANLIS ON EOKA: Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis made the following statement yesterday: «The British government has repeatedly stated that it is willing to find a satisfactory solution to the Cyprus issue but that it has been prevented from doing so by the continuation of the Cypriot fighters' armed struggle. Already the generous declaration (of a ceasefire) by the leader of EOKA, Colonel Georgios Grivas-Digenis, restoring peace on the island, provides the British government with the opportunity to show that they truly wish a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus issue. Greece would like to believe that the British government, in response to the moderate demands of the ethnarch, Archbishop Makarios, will put an end to the dangerous crisis on Cyprus. EDA ON EOKA: An announcement by the United Democratic Left (EDA) calls EOKA's ceasefire declaration proof of a plan to betray the Cypriot cause. WEST GERMANY-KPD: Paris, 18 - The European press, commenting on the West German Communist Party being outlawed, said the move had long been expected. The West Berlin press believe that the Adenauer government is making a political mistake.
