Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

SOVIET AMBASSADOR: At 8.30 p.m. yesterday, the new ambassador of the Soviet Union in Athens, Mr Sergeyev, arrived by air in Athens from Rome, accompanied by his wife and daughter. (Ed. note: The ambassador’s arrival marked a great improvement in Greek-Soviet relations. No ambassador had served at the Soviet Embassy in Athens since the last ambassador, Admiral Rondionov, left the country in the midst of the Greek civil war of the late 1940s.) Mr Sergeyev was met at the airport by the Foreign Ministry’s director of protocol, Mr Androulis, the Charge D’Affaires of the Soviet Union, Mr Chernichev, and embassy staff. The new ambassador made the following statement: “(...) I hope that here in Greece I will find good will on the part of all concerned, so that we will be able to work together to consolidate peace.” US AMBASSADOR: Greece’s Foreign Minister, Mr Stefanos Stephanopoulos, had an extended meeting yesterday afternoon with United States Ambassador to Greece Mr Cannon. ICE-CREAM SELLERS: With the advent of the first autumn chill in the air, vendors of ice cream and lemonade have been disappearing from the streets to be replaced by the roasted chestnut vendors, who are beginning to make an appearance.
