TERRORISM IN CYPRUS: The ethnarch of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, has lodged a strong protest with the United Nations secretary-general regarding the oppressive measures the British government has imposed on Cyprus as of last Saturday (July 16, 1955). The Cypriot ethnarch made the following statement: “(...) The governor, on the pretext of an emergency, has abolished all traces of personal freedom and is now able to use his authority to make arrests without any evidence as well as to incarcerate any resident of the island without first making any specific charge or having presented him before any judicial authority. (...) These were the methods used during the war by the fascists and Nazis in their occupied territories. It is clear that these methods are being employed by the colonial government of Cyprus to strangle nationalist sentiments and to crush the national resistance of the people of Cyprus. However, this is something it will not be able to achieve.” TRADE FAIR: 16 - Greece has decided not participate in the Izmir International Trade Fair because Turkey has not paid its trade debts, according to an announcement.
