SOVIET NUCLEAR WEAPONS: London, 18 – Another major Soviet thermonuclear explosion, the most powerful to date which was announced simultaneously today in London and Washington, has increased fears of radioactive pollution, mainly in Tokyo but also around the world. These concerns were strongly expressed in New Delhi today by Indian Prime Minister Jawarharlal Nehru at the start of a conference of the Asian legal advisory committee. Nehru asked whether an international committee should be set up, consisting of prominent legal experts to examine whether international law and unwritten moral laws allowed a country to conduct tests that poisoned the atmosphere and put the very existence of the human race at risk. GREECE-TURKEY: According to confirmed reports, a note verbale from the Turkish to the Greek government regarding the latter’s official welcome for Cypriot Archbishop Makarios in Athens was immediately rejected as unacceptable. The Greek government has meanwhile issued an announcement strongly criticizing recent statements by Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes censuring the British government for releasing Makarios.
