UNIVERSITY AND CYPRUS: Athens University has appealed to the academic world of Great Britain in the name of common struggles and sacrifices on the part of both nations for freedom, to condemn their government’s current policy on the Cyprus issue and to proclaim the Cypriot people’s sacred and inalienable right to rid themselves of the colonial yoke. (...) Athens University asks British academics to realize that it is not possible to be indifferent or to actively oppose the Cypriot people’s nationalist sentiments forever. That would mean denying their own noble liberal traditions and being drawn into a medieval barbarism that is in direct opposition to the ideals of freedom of opinion and the right to self-determination of all peoples. “In that case,” continued the appeal, “Greece’s academic world would have the right to accuse British academics of violating their noble traditions regarding humanity and the Greek nation, to protest against its decision and to make the further course of educational relations between Greece and Great Britain subject to developments in the Cyprus issue.”
