EDITH HAMILTON: Edith Hamilton, an American woman famous for her studies of ancient Greek and Roman civilization, arrived here this evening on the ocean liner Queen Frederiki. Hamilton studied Ancient Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr University in Philadelphia, where she graduated in 1894, and at Munich University. After working for many years as a professor at various American colleges and universities, she devoted herself, at the age of 50, to researching and writing books on Greek civilization. Her first book “The Greek Way” was a great success. Some of her other books, always about Greek letters, are “Echo of Greece,” “Three Greek Plays,” “The Roman Way,” “Mythology” and “Witness to the Truth: Christ and His Interpreters.” Her work is distinct for her deep knowledge of the subject and was widely popular in her own country. The New York Times wrote of her work, “The Greeks are still our teachers and Miss Hamilton is our best teacher about Greeks.” Hamilton, who is truly passionate about all things Greek, has come here with a group of American actors and artists hoping to stage “Prometheus Bound” in the form of an oratorio at the Herod Atticus Theater.
