GREEK STANCE: It has been generally observed that the situation in the region of the Near East bordering on Greece is extremely tense, following the landing of American forces in Lebanon. This is forcing the Greek government to watch developments extremely closely. The policy that is expected to be taken by the prime minister, Costas Karamanlis, is that as far as possible Greece should remain impartial regarding the current conflict in the eastern Mediterranean. MURDERS IN CYPRUS: Nicosia, 19 – Over the past 24 hours, more Greek and Turkish Cypriots have been killed or injured. This morning Nikolaos Christodoulou, 60, and Michail Georgiou, 64, were shot down outside a Turkish confectionery shop in the Turkish district and were seriously injured. Total casualties in both communities today are four dead and two injured (among the Turks) and three dead and four injured (among the Greeks). Today a curfew was imposed in Paphos after a bomb exploded on a main road in the town, injuring a Turkish man. Three Turks were also killed in the village of Gosi, while they were pumping water from a well.
