Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

VOLOS EARTHQUAKES: As work teams and local residents were busy clearing away the ruins of the strong tremor a few days ago, a larger quake occurred at 9.20 a.m. yesterday, completing the destruction of the town. The victims now number seven dead and 108 injured, while 90-95 percent of the homes have either been destroyed or are uninhabitable. THEATER: (From a review by Emilios Hourmouzios of Corneille’s “El Cid” by the Theatre National Populaire of France, directed by Jean Villar): “(...) Mr Gerard Philippe, who played Rodrigo, performed with all the reserves of charm he has acquired from his leading roles in the cinema, so his brilliance could not be faulted, not even where that was possible. Perhaps some objection could be made to the purely epic sections of ‘El Cid’ where a more imposing masculinity rather than charm is in order. (...) The performance gave the impression that much in the theater is being renewed — direction, stage sets and interpretation.” YIANNOPOULOS: Dinos Yiannopoulos, a conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, has arrived in Athens.
