Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY: Casablanca, 22 - The French today deployed a large number of tanks, aircraft and legionnaires with orders to launch counter-attacks against native peoples in the French territories of north Africa, after the bloody incidents of last Sunday (August 21) at Oued Zem in Morocco, 150 kilometers east of Casablanca, in which about 600 people were killed. The district, in which about 1,000 Europeans live, looked like it had been torched. The excesses were unprecedented. In retribution, nine villages in Algeria were flattened. Meanwhile, any native considered even slightly under suspicion was killed on the spot, whether man, woman or child. In all, hundreds of Moroccans and Algerians were killed by tank guns, missiles and aircraft artillery. Those who managed to escape were executed with the bayonets of some 80 soldiers from the Foreign Legion. GREECE-CZECHOSLOVAKIA: Prague Radio has announced that this year Czechoslovakia will officially participate with its own stand at the Thessaloniki International Fair, one of the most important in Europe.
