Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

ARTHUR MILLER: Washington, 22 – Commenting on his suspended sentence of nine months’ imprisonment and a fine of 500 dollars, the American dramatist Arthur Miller, the husband of the American film star Marilyn Monroe, said he planned to exhaust all legal means available to him to be cleared of the charges of contempt of Congress, after refusing to name alleged communists with whom he had once attended meetings. “I decided to defend myself, although I would have had no problem acting otherwise, because I do not believe that someone should have to become an informer in order to do his job freely in the United States. I hope that my actions will help make the United States a country with greater freedom of speech and thought.” EDITH HAMILTON: The American philhellene Edith Hamilton arrived in Athens the day before yesterday after traveling on the ocean liner Queen Frederiki, along with a group of American artists who will perform Aeschylus’ “Prometheus Bound” in the form of an oratorio, at the Herod Atticus Theater, to be directed by James Elliot.
