SOLOMOS AND ROMANIA: Bucharest, 27 – The centenary since the birth of the Greek poet Dionysios Solomos was commemorated yesterday in the great hall of the Academy of Romania. The event was held at the initiative of the Academy, the Writers’ Union and the Romanian Institute in order to cultivate cultural relations with foreign countries. Academy member Victor Evthymiou spoke about Solomos’s work and the actress Igisippina Makri-Efthymiou recited some of Solomos’s poems. CHEAP MONEY: A general meeting of National Bank shareholders was held yesterday to discuss the board’s report for 1956, which is important as it follows on views expressed recently regarding the right policy to implement in order to raise productivity. The report focused on the bank’s views on the most appropriate economic policy, which it believes should tend toward eliminating the free money market and providing long-term capital at low interest rates to raise production and put Greek industry in a better position to compete with foreign products. Current credit restrictions are an obstacle to wiping out the free money market and therefore to reducing interest rates.
