Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

NO WANT AT CHRISTMAS: The prime minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos, issued the following message to the people yesterday: “... Poverty is unacceptable during these holy days, especially wherever there is the possibility of offering aid. I believe that if we all wish, we will do something so that none of our brothers will spend the holidays in want.” CAROLS: Joyful children’s voices raised in song have been echoing through the streets over the Christmas holiday. AEOLOU STREET: About 3,000 street vendors have set up approximately 1,500 stalls along Aeolou Street and some of its side streets, as they do every year, selling anything to do with Christmas and the New Year celebrations. Toy soldiers, cars and tanks, balloons, crockery, sweet platters, icons (...). FOOD SUFFICIENCY: According to an announcement made by the Trade Ministry following a visit to the central markets of Athens and Piraeus by its deputy ministers, there is a full stock of all kinds of foodstuffs despite the fact that consumption is higher than it was last year. PANHELLENIC: According to telegrams yesterday, the Panhellenic basketball team defeated Brussels by 81-56.
