CYPRIOT STRUGGLE: Members of the Cypriot Ethnarch Council stationed in Athens met yesterday in a meeting chaired by the ethnarch, Archbishop Makarios, to discuss the situation in Cyprus after the recent mass arrests of Greek Cypriots by the British authorities on the Eastern Mediterranean island. During the meeting, it was decided to send a letter of protest to all the governments of United Nations member states condemning the British actions against the island's Greek population. It was also decided to issue a blacklist describing the tortures perpetrated by the British authorities against Greek Cypriots. Meanwhile, the Greek Foreign Ministry has issued a statement condemning the idea of sending Turkish troops into Cyprus, as no Turkish Cypriots were being threatened. A British Foreign Office spokesman read out a statement at a press conference yesterday to the effect that the British government would not approve of Ankara sending any Turkish troops to the island, as it does not believe such a move would contribute to maintaining order on the island, especially in the current situation.
