ANDREAS DIMITRIOU: Nicosia, 30 - A criminal court this morning sentenced Andreas Dimitriou, 22, of Varosha, to death for shooting a British shopkeeper, Sidney Taylor, in Famagusta on November 28, 1955. Dimitriou is the first Greek to be sentenced to death after the enactment by the British authorities of emergency measures in Cyprus. (...) The courthouse had been placed under heavy guard for the duration of the trial. Soldiers inspected all individuals entering the courthouse at bayonet point, including the members of the judiciary and the lawyers for the defense. Meanwhile, in the town of Paphos there were pitched battles between schoolchildren armed with stones and British soldiers using tear gas and clubs. Eight young Cypriots and a few British soldiers were injured in the skirmishes. JULES DASSIN: The Cinema Club will screen today, as its scheduled Sunday performance at the Asty theater at 11 a.m., Jules Dassin’s film “Night and the City.” This was the American director’s last film before he was blacklisted by Senator Joseph McCarthy’s Sub-Committee on Un-American Activities (1950).
