Selection: Michalis Katsigeras

CYPRIOT STRUGGLE: Nicosia, 31 - A tragedy unfolded today in a Nicosia hospital during an attempt to free a Cypriot patriot from custody. Three men from the National Cypriot Fighters’ Organization (EOKA) undertook the difficult task of saving the prisoner Polykarpos Georgiadis, one of the group’s cadres and a cousin of the hero Michalis Karaolis who was executed by the colonial authorities. Two of the men paid for their efforts with their lives. The third man, who was injured, escaped the clutches of the men guarding Georgiadis. One British guard was killed and a Cypriot assistant to the British guard was fatally injured. Also killed was a Cypriot hospital employee. COSTIS LEIVADEAS: Performances of “Orestes” by the Costis Leivadeas Theater of Tragedy at the ancient theater of Eretria have met with great success. The weekend performances were attended by over 4,800 people. SCHOOL YEAR: It has been announced that the 1956-57 school year will begin on September 20 for primary schools and September 25 for high schools. Registration at primary schools begins on September 10.
