Stocks dip 6 pct on weak banks

Greek stocks tumbled more than six percent yesterday but closed above the 2,000-point mark as renewed recession fears pushed all major European markets lower.

The Athens Exchange's benchmark general index shed 6.42 percent to 2,050.31 points, after dipping to as low as 2,029 points in intra-session trade.

Banks retreated 8.15 percent.

Alpha Bank was among the session's biggest losers, dropping 11.30 percent to 10.52 euros, while National Bank slumped 9.18 percent to 17.62 euros.

Aegean Airlines, which reported a 21 percent drop in nine-month profit due to rising fuel costs, ended 3.89 percent in the red at 3.46 euros.

Turnover reached 172.2 million euros versus 146 million euros in the previous session.
