NATO prospects a chance for solution
UN mediator Matthew Nimetz presents no final proposal on FYROM name, is ready for meetings and counts on US influence

‘There were many ways of handling the issue,’ said UN special mediator Matthew Nimetz, pictured with Greek FM Dora Bakoyannis. ‘UN General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim chose one that will have repercussions on the progress of bilateral relations and the solution of the issue.’

By Tom Ellis - Kathimerini

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s desire to join NATO may act as a catalyst toward a compromise solution on the issue of its name, believes United Nations Special Envoy Matthew Nimetz. In an interview with Kathimerini, Nimetz censured UN General Assembly President Srgjan Kerim for addressing his compatriot Branko Crvenkovski as “president of Macedonia,” because it ran counter to the provisions of the Security Council and would have repercussions.

Nimetz said he counted on the role of Washington, which has high credibility in the region and is interested in NATO enlargement.

The UN mediator, who is familiar with the Greek political scene, described his relations with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis as very frank. He said he did not think that New Democracy’s narrow electoral win would be any impediment to making decisions, and could prove stronger than a large majority.
