Defense probe grows Two more purchases being examined as political stakes rise

The Defense Ministry yesterday forwarded two cases relating to the procurement of arms by the previous government for further investigation by prosecutors. It also looks increasingly likely that a parliamentary committee will be formed to look at a report into the purchase of two other weapons systems. The new cases relate to the purchase of four Russian hovercraft in 2000 and a contract to buy 20 NH-90 helicopters in 2003 from a multinational company based in France.

Impact assessment
The European Commission's «impact assessment» of Turkey's potential membership of the bloc notes that accession «would be challenging for both the EU and Turkey.» «If well managed, [Turkey's membership] would offer important opportunities for both,» the EU study added. However, the diplomatic niceties and generalizations conceal a not-so-promising context.
COMMENTARY
Personal responsibility
The Maliakos Gulf road is, no doubt, in sorry shape and improvements to it have stalled for no plausible reason. Furthermore, the quality of the highway network remains highly suspect despite all the money that has been spent on it. This however concerns only one aspect of the problem, namely the State and the role it should play.
