Greece moved a step closer to the prospect of early elections yesterday after a New Democracy MP was ousted from the party for criticizing several of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis's close advisers, a move that left the ruling conservatives with a parliamentary majority of just one.

OA and OSE staff take grievances to the street
A woman watches a protest by employees of Olympic Airlines (OA) and the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) outside the Transport Ministry in Athens yesterday.
EDITORIAL
No more talk, just action
The Vatopedi affair must be settled on strictly legal grounds and not just with statements meant to impress, and the solution must entail the return to the state of all the assets that have been lost. In the case of embattled Olympic Airlines, the government needs to come up with a viable solution, while on the pension fund front the reform package must be put into practice. These, among others, are some of the most pressing problems facing Greece right now and a solution must be found even though we are in the midst of a global financial crisis.

Waste not, want not
Greece consumes more than it is able to produce. It is also relatively poor in the natural resources necessary for manufacturing and fuel production. This means that it has to import a lot more than it can export, which leads to an endless cycle of borrowing to finance the imports and, consequently, ever-widening deficits that undermine the country's future development. A natural solution would be to pursue better waste management.
