Need for caution and courage
Greeks have a soft spot for navel gazing and they too often behave as if their country is the center of the world.
While President Hu Jintao, the leader of China - which happens to be one of the globe's fastest-rising powers - was visiting Greece, most of the local media chose to focus on domestic issues.
We must, at some point, realize that we live in a rapidly changing global environment. |

The limits of terror
Well-planned terrorist attacks combine the element of surprise with great symbolism.
The September 11 attacks were the supreme example of a terrorism that is based on total surprise and, at the same time, exploits the powerful symbolism of its actions to the full. The destruction of the World Trade Center in New York and the strike against the Pentagon dealt a blow to the heart of the United States and, symbolically, the West. |

A grim forecast
The annual presentation of the state budget reminds us of the old saying about second marriages being the triumph of hope over experience. In life, a second chance might be all one needs to get it right, but in drawing up budgets, our governments have managed to get things wrong time after time. They have never managed to meet their own forecasts. (Which raises the question of why they bother - is it the triumph of ritual over substance, perhaps?) |
