Powell, troika to talk Papandreou hopes US official’s visit will reshape ties with EU

Foreign Minister George Papandreou is to meet with US Secretary of State Colin Powell in Brussels tomorrow as the American official tries to mend fences with the EU and to bring it and NATO behind Washington in its war against Iraq.

Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyianni yesterday confronted in court a suspected top member of the November 17 terrorist group that assassinated her husband, conservative MP Pavlos Bakoyiannis, nearly 14 years ago in the city center.
Erdogan wants Cyprus talks
ANKARA (AFP) - The Turkish government confirmed yesterday it will initiate its own bid to reunify Cyprus, following the failure of a last-ditch UN effort, and called for talks with Greece next week to discuss the problem.
BSE results expected next week
The results of specialized laboratory tests in Britain on tissue samples from a cow suspected of having contracted bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) before being slaughtered and its meat sold for consumption in northern Greece will not be available for at least a week, officials said yesterday.

Erdogan’s initiative
A few weeks after UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's initiative was torpedoed by Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is trying to initiate more diplomatic action on Cyprus. This is what seems to be behind his request to meet with Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis on the sidelines of the Balkan meeting in Belgrade on April 9.

Blatant distortion
The provocative decision by the Bush administration to attack Iraq has prompted many analysts at home and abroad to invoke the controversial presidential elections in 2000 in order to cast doubt on the public legitimacy of this war. US President George W. Bush is said to lack the strong and incontestable public mandate needed to launch war, as, for many Americans, he actually vote-rigged his way to the White House.
