On the eve of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's presentation of his report to the Security Council on the failed effort to solve the Cyprus problem, his special envoy for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, voiced criticism of the Greek-Cypriot leadership, noting that President Tassos Papadopoulos had presented his people only with what he saw as negative aspects of the Annan plan.

A say on Europe
We are now in the final stretch to the European elections, but the questions surrounding European integration are conspicuously absent from the Greek agenda. The Euro polls in Greece are once again to be reduced to a nationwide opinion poll. Greece is not an exception as the phenomenon is common to a larger or smaller extent in other member states. Most European citizens remain unconcerned with elections for the European Parliament, and only a small percentage turn out at the polling centers.
COMMENTARY
The fall guy
George Papandreou's decision yesterday to relieve Dimitris Thanos of his duties in organizing the rallies of PASOK party and, most importantly, the reasons the newly installed Socialist chairman gave for doing so are cause for bewilderment, not to say indignation. Thanos was removed «after a visit by PASOK's chairman 10 days ago to Messinia that was in every way a failure.» Thanos was held responsible for the fact that during his visit to some village near Ancient Olympia, Papandreou, instead of receiving a warm welcome, «was subjected to harsh criticism over PASOK's agricultural policy.»
