Cyprus divides Turks In harsh terms, Erdogan says issue isn’t Denktash’s ‘personal business’

The Cyprus issue took a significant turn yesterday after Turkey's unofficial leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, criticized Rauf Denktash in the harshest language any Turkish official has used against the man who has led Turkish Cypriots for the past three decades and who still enjoys the backing of the military and state establishment.

State coffers empty
Data from the General Accounting Office on the state budget deficit for the first 11 months of 2002 confirm that the government's claim of a surplus is not based on fact. Yesterday's official announcement shows that the January-December deficit was 7 billion euros, a figure not only double that of the previous year, but an indication of a serious deviation from the government's program.
COMMENTARY
Erdogan’s challenge
Turkish Justice and Development Party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan's statement criticizing Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and Ankara's policy on Cyprus is a direct challenge to the post-Kemal establishment. All the more so when it follows a diametrically opposed decision by the National Security Council in which his close colleagues, the premier and foreign affairs minister, participated.
