Politicians: Are they responsible?
The debate as to whether politicians bear political responsibility is quite meaningless. Political responsibility is not like a shirt that can be put on or taken off. Politicians cannot take on this kind of responsibility. On the contrary, only the people are entitled to hold public figures responsible for their actions, whether the latter like it or not. Criminal responsibility, on the other hand, is an entirely different story.

A grim forecast
The annual presentation of the state budget reminds us of the old saying about second marriages being the triumph of hope over experience. In life, a second chance might be all one needs to get it right, but in drawing up budgets, our governments have managed to get things wrong time after time. They have never managed to meet their own forecasts. (Which raises the question of why they bother - is it the triumph of ritual over substance, perhaps?)
