Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis repeated yesterday his invitation to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to resume talks but added that if the two countries could not settle their name dispute, Athens is prepared to block Skopje's bid to join the European Union as well as NATO.

EDITORIAL
A strike with little or no point at all
The social security reform bill has finally been passed by the Greek Parliament. In the meantime, the socialist opposition proposal to hold a national referendum on the issue has been rejected by the majority of MPs. Now, the conservative administration of New Democracy must enforce this new piece of legislation. The relevant obligation is set out in the Constitution. In view of this, the ongoing strike of Bank of Greece employees will serve no union objectives, but simply create problems for the country's citizens.
COMMENTARY
Violence and pipe dreams
Making his way to his university office, professor Savvas Robolis got a nasty surprise: a banner daubed with a threat against his life. Robolis, a scientific advisor to the General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE), has for years fought for workers' rights and fairer income distribution. The idiotic banner must not be the work of youth party members, but of empty-headed nihilists. The problem is that such bullying behavior is fueled by the confrontational mood cultivated by the Communist Party (KKE) and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA).
