Europeans shift on Turkey
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who said Tuesday that Ankara should recognize Cyprus before it begins its own EU accession talks on October 3, has been joined by other European officials expressing similar sentiments.
COMMENTARY
New Democracy goes local
The government's proposal that mayors and local officials be elected in the first round of polling if they reach 42 percent of the vote came like a bolt from the blue, even though it had been part of New Democracy's policy agenda. Much has been written for and against the reform, proposed by Vangelis Meimarakis, ND's general secretary. But the conservatives' motive is clear: to strengthen ND's hand over local administrations.
OPINION
France, Germany speak up on Cyprus
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin's declaration - that the launch of Turkey's accession talks with the European Union is «inconceivable» unless Ankara recognizes Cyprus - is an exceptionally interesting development, chiefly for Greece, but also because it heralds the emergence of a new balance of power in the European Commission.
