Zachopoulos magistrate to name suspects and rekindle interest in case

A magistrate is expected by the end of the week to name and charge the main suspects in the alleged blackmail of former Culture Ministry general secretary Christos Zachopoulos, thereby upsetting the government's bid to shake off the fallout from the scandal, sources said yesterday.

Clamping down on tax evasion
Our government's plan to clamp down on tax evasion by equalizing the levies on heating oil and automotive diesel has come up against numerous obstacles, some of which however are only pretexts. Instead of spending time on complex tax rebates, the Economy and Finance Ministry could stop the theft of public money with one move.

Who wins matters
As Kathimerini was going to press, the the outcome of Super Tuesday primary voting in the USA was still unknown. But there's no doubt that whoever moves into the White House in January next year will be better than the incumbent president. But why should Greece be interested in who prevailed yesterday or who will win in November?
