EDITORIAL
Ivory towers under siege
Greece is the country of the absurd, but absurdity is an understatement when referring to the abuses taking place within the confines of the country's universities. In the most recent reminder of this, the rector of the Athens University of Economics and Business had the temerity to remove several notice boards that had been put up without permission.
COMMENTARY
Spill the beans, Mr Minister
So, the price of «barbouni» (red mullet), that lovely bewhiskered fish, has risen to 2.90 euros. So what? It's a delicious fish, so why shouldn't it cost the equivalent of 1,000 drachmas? At the end of the day, those who can't afford barbouni can always opt for the «poor man's barbouni» - «koutsomoura» (blunt-snouted mullet) - which is cheaper because it lacks the barbouni's luxurious whiskers.
OPINION
No more room for provincialism
Politicians in this country can be unbelievably provincial sometimes. This was illustrated once more by the fact that Greece is at risk of finding itself expelled from the European Union program to conform to the Kyoto Protocol. Both the relevant minister and his deputy have tried to throw sand in the eyes of foreign observers by using typical Balkan machinations. Either the ministry employee in charge of pollution was away on holiday or a United Nations employee was calling a number that doesn't exist.
