Prime Minister-elect George Papandreou is expected to name his first Cabinet today, following PASOK's resounding victory at the polls on Sunday, a result which continues to send shock waves through New Democracy and yesterday led to one of the previous government's most senior members, Giorgos Souflias, announcing his retirement from politics.

Learning from past mistakes
The conservative New Democracy party suffered a heavy defeat in Sunday's elections and if, as a party, it wants to take itself and have others take it seriously, it needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror and acknowledge the mistakes it made that led to this defeat.

«We got the message,» said New Democracy officials following the bitter result of the European parliamentary elections in June. «Now it's time to roll up our sleeves and work hard to make up for the lost ground,» they added.

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis may have called early elections the way a gambler stakes everything on a last throw of the dice but as the campaign comes to an end, the clash appears to be less of a personal whim and more of a turning point in modern Greece's history.
