Tsunami aid breaks record Some 17 million euros raised by media marathon and celebrity auction

An unprecedented response to a two-day broadcasting marathon by Greek radio and television stations raised over 17 million euros for the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami waves, as donations continued to pour in yesterday.

BoG set to put damper on loans
The rapid rise in consumer debt worries the Bank of Greece, which plans to make it more difficult for commercial banks to issue such loans by demanding an increase in provisions. The outstanding balance of consumer loans at the end of October 2004 was 16.11 billion euros, up 38.1 percent from last year, according to the latest Bank of Greece data.
Minor changes to media law
Government officials said on Wednesday that only minor changes will be made in the draft law on media ownership and state procurement, while others expressed fears that some of the law's provisions are incompatible with European Union regulations.
Nicosia objects to port move
Nicosia denounced as «illegal and totally groundless» yesterday a decision by the Turkish-Cypriot leadership to open up ports in the occupied territories to international trade.
Major customs bust of contraband cigarettes

Education reform
The proposals by Thanos Veremis, president of the National Education Council, regarding the national debate on education, have once again underscored concerns that our schools and universities are failing to fulfill their mission. Past studies have reinforced these concerns. The annual report by the Organization for Cooperation and Security (OSCE), which was published recently, gave Greek students very poor marks in mathematics, the physical sciences, and reading comprehension.
COMMENTARY
Pragmatism
The grim state of the Greek economy means that the conservative government of Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has no option but to follow the path of fiscal discipline. But the campaign for fiscal reform will need to extend beyond 2005, as the government will be unable to eliminate the mammoth deficit or expand the country's productive base by the end of this year.
