EC praises Greek effort to cut deficit But warns of ‘optimistic’ figures

After months of stiff criticism from Brussels, the government was applauded yesterday as the European Commission approved the plan to reduce Greece's towering deficit as set out in its revised Stability and Growth program. «The Greek government must be praised, not only for implementing the 2005 budget with rigor, but also for announcing additional measures for this year.

PASOK hostage to business interests
«This is a criminal government;» «The government of New Democracy is in a state of panic;» «Phenomenal decline in public revenues;» «Phenomenal divergences from budget targets;» «Phenomenal decline in farmers' incomes;» «Phenomenal crisis of confidence in the Greek economy;» «Desperate fiscal policy;» «A sellout of the Greek people's fortunes;» «Political disaster.» This is not a selection of headlines printed in the pro-PASOK press. Surprisingly, they are extracts from a parliamentary speech made yesterday by Socialist opposition leader George Papandreou.
COMMENTARY
No protection
Is there any protection for the Greek consumer? The question arose once again after reports surfaced concerning moldy yogurt produced by a reputable dairy foods giant that exports its goods abroad, followed by other reports of honey containing high levels of poisonous chemicals. If we are to judge from the reactions of the so-called responsible officials, the question is not easy to answer. Greece's state food safety watchdog either failed to do something it should have done...
