PM gets veto boost
Almost all Greeks support government’s handling of FYROM

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis's popularity has received a boost after Greece stopped the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) from joining NATO last week, but most Greeks agree that ties between the two countries need to improve, according to a survey.

EDITORIAL
Making room for optimism and hard work
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis's address to the Greek public in the wake of the NATO summit meeting in Bucharest last week where Athens blocked FYROM's path to NATO membership came at the right moment. These developments were a big confidence boost for the Greeks. It was a pragmatic, down-to-earth evaluation of our strengths, free from fears and chest-thumping.
COMMENTARY
Heavy burden of responsibility
And now, what are we to do without champion weightlifters, without those naive youngsters who destroyed their bodies so that the Greeks could exult in medals during Olympic Games? Whatever the result of a second round of tests, last Friday's bombshell that 11 of the 13 men and women on the national team had been found with traces of illegal substances dissolved even the last wisps of illusion as to how medals are won and what these little disks of gold, silver and bronze mean in terms of the lives destroyed.
