The ruling conservatives yesterday received timely encouragement ahead of the October local elections as an opinion poll put New Democracy a comfortable 4 percent ahead of its main rival PASOK and seemed to indicate that confidence in the Socialists is waning.

Greeks for reform, not false promises
All public opinion polls, including the latest by VPRC, show that a high percentage of Greeks (68 percent) might be displeased with the government, but they are even more disgruntled with the main opposition (83 percent). The former might be explained by the fact that every government is forced to take steps that are unpleasant. The latter is explained by the fact that the opposition keeps delving into the past, a past which has already been rejected by the Greek people.
COMMENTARY
Vision and facts
The recent European Parliament report calling on Ankara to recognize the genocide of Armenians during World War I and that of the Assyrians in the country's southeast and the Pontic Greeks in the Black Sea region may have irked Turkish officials but it does not come close to constituting official European Union policy.
