Hospital waste warning Unchecked disposal of toxic refuse poses health risk, Ombudsman says

The management and disposal of toxic waste by state hospitals is woefully inefficient and poses a serious public health risk, according to a damning report by Greece's Ombudsman Giorgos Kaminis which was delivered to Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and other high-ranking government officials yesterday.

Double standards
For a moment, Greek citizens thought that the state had begun to implement the law. There indeed seemed to be judges out there who did treat all citizens as equal, regardless of their economic class or political connections. The recent decision by a court in Nafplion to sentence a well-known business tycoon to jail for 48 months - after finding him guilty of repeated violations of the town-planning legislation - gave some hope that Justice could be served.
COMMENTARY
The nuclear card
Relations between Washington and Tehran are on a dangerous path. The abductions of Iranian diplomats in Iraq and the repeated threats from the Americans prompted warnings from Tehran that it will strike US interests around the world. Iran also test-fired a long-range missile. The crisis is largely the result of US policies. Despite its inflammatory rhetoric, Tehran has avoided any direct provocation.
