Gov’t offers to bridge gap in bond buyback Taxpayer to foot 3-million-euro bill

On the alert as borders shift
United States President George W. Bush's tour of the Balkans, the visit by NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer to Turkey and the surprise remarks yesterday by UN chief Ban Ki-moon - that the organization's peacekeeping force in divided Cyprus over the past 43 years should not be taken for granted - are a reminder that the situation in our broader region remains volatile and that the large powers may want to settle the outstanding disputes...

Moderate and humble
A prominent banker told me the other day, «For over 20 years, I have financed Greece's biggest entrepreneurs but I can assure you I have never joined them on a yacht trip.» Government cadres seem to have forgotten the prime minister's calls for modesty and humility and appear increasingly vulnerable to the temptation of wealth and the good life.
