In his first Cabinet meeting since Sunday's defeat to PASOK in the European Parliament elections, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis yesterday told his ministers that they have to work harder to win back voters but did not give any indication of when he might carry out a reshuffle.

Public order has to be a priority
The ruling conservative New Democracy government has repeatedly pledged in the past to harden its stance on the lawlessness that has been increasingly growing out of control in certain areas of the center of the Greek capital. However, the administration has woefully failed to live up to its promises.

Old flames can die
I met with a friend the other day who's a traditional New Democracy voter and especially passionate about Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis. He was livid and I was surprised to learn that on Sunday he chose to go to the beach rather than vote in the European parliamentary elections. I asked why.

Elections are a time when the individual participates in the evolution of the national. For us in Europe, the elections on Sunday are an opportunity to take part in the development of the European Union. These are the seventh elections for the European Parliament, a body that has become gradually more powerful and more representative of the people who now count themselves members of the European Union.
