30 million euros set aside for regenerating and protecting forest

Anyone caught building illegally on the burnt land on Mount Parnitha in Attica will have their home immediately razed, the government said yesterday as it unveiled a 30-million-euro package to provide better protection for the forest that was ravaged by fire at the end of last month.

Ushering in a new, greener culture
The impressive protest rally outside Parliament yesterday calling for the immediate reforestation of Mount Parnitha is a sign of optimism. Greece's civil society is gradually awakening but a demonstration alone is not enough. In the wake of the devastating forest fires that ravaged the area, there is a need for careful monitoring and active participation to reforest what has been lost and protect what is left.
COMMENTARY
Wired masses in physical form
Five thousand people came together in Syntagma Square on a hot mid-summer Sunday evening. It was not a small crowd. It was people who had spread the word via sms and blog messages in what may well be the first bodily manifestation of specific groups in Greece who use the new technologies to communicate. Users of mobile phones, laptops and a range of state-of-the-art gadgets turned up in Syntagma as citizens.
